Who Is Jesus To You?

Introduction:

Jesus was and still is a lot of things to a lot of people. We want to see some of the various groups of people this evening, and what Jesus might mean to them.

1. To the mariners, Jesus is the master and sovereign of the sea (Luke 8:22-25).

Luke 8:24-25 And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

What manner of man is this? I’ll tell you what manner of man Jesus is. He is the omnipotent, all-powerful Son of God, Who has power over all things, even the winds and the waters of the sea. If only we could believe that Jesus has all the power of Heaven at His command, to dispense to His people as He sees fit. There is not a wind nor a wave that is not subject to His control. May Jesus give us the faith to trust Him with all our storms of life.

2. To the student and the teacher, Jesus is the Greatest Teacher of all (Matthew 7:28-29).

Men think that they are so wise and intellectual, whether it be in the realms of religious or in secular knowledge. But in reality we are all unlearned ignoramuses, who know nothing as we ought to know it, in comparison to our all-wise, all-knowing Saviour. May we as Baptists not get puffed up with our knowledge of the truth.

1 Corinthians 1:23-24 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

1 Corinthians 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

Do you want to have true wisdom and knowledge? You will find it in Christ. Outside of Christ there is no foundation for wisdom and knowledge. Jesus is the standard for wisdom and knowledge. All wisdom and knowledge must line up and agree with the standard of Christ, otherwise it has no meaning and is useless.

3. To the chemist and other scientists, Jesus is the law of science.

We hear about the laws of science and the laws of nature. And men think they know so much about science, and what makes this old world turn and keep on turning. But beloved, Jesus is the law of nature, and He is the law of science. He created it all. He set all things in their proper place and order, and now He sustains and maintains all things in this universe by His power.

And speaking out of knowledge of the sciences, as a former student of chemistry, and physics, and geology, and biology, beloved, men don’t know anything as they ought to know it. So much of their high esteemed knowledge, to much surprise, is nothing more than pure speculation. So much of what is called science, and what are called the facts of science, don’t even have enough proof and evidence to call a theory, much less to be peddled as facts. Don’t believe every thing that the men in the little white coats have to say!

They tell us that they know where the world came from and where life came from, but I’ll assure you that they are nothing more than dreamers and liars, who can not produce solid facts or evidence for there so-called theories. Beloved, these are haters of God, who will not believe the plain truth of God’s Word, which says “In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth.”

But, beloved, Jesus is the law of nature and of science.

Colossians 1:17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist (held together).

All things are held together by Jesus. The multitude of heavenly bodies in all the galaxies of the universe or held together by Him, as well as the protons, and neutrons, and electrons of sub-microscopic atoms; all things are held together by Him. And to think that men worry about keeping their salvation together, and their churches together, and their lives together. Brethren, we need to look to the one who holds it all together by His mighty power!

Colossians 2:3 In whom (that is, in Jesus) are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

What a wonderful thought, that in Jesus is hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Its like a lifelong treasure hunt, to dig up hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge, both spiritual and material. This is one of the great blessings of the Christian life, to search for hidden treasure, and then to rejoice in it when we find it. And the treasures of Jesus are never exhausted, but are innumerable and there for the finding.

4. To the sick folk as well as to the physician, Jesus is the healer and the Great Physician.

Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Matthew 9:35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

I’m sure that Luke, who himself was a physician, was amazed and blessed by the power of Christ to heal all manner of sickness and disease.

Luke 9:11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

Oh that physicians today could understand that all healing is with the Lord! How proud many doctors are today. To talk with them, you would think that life and healing was in their hands. But beloved, all life, and all healing is in the hands of the Lord Jesus. After men have done all that they can do, they must leave the healing in the hands of the only One who is able to heal. May God help us as His people to understand and to believe this truth.

5. To the farmer, Jesus is the harvest.

Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

This was a blessed promise made to Noah and to all of his posterity after the great flood. We don’t have to worry about the seasons continuing, or the seedtime and harvest and these things, because the Lord has promised that they will continue for as long as this world remains. Farmers plant and do there work in the fields of the world, and at the end of the season there is a harvest. This is all because of the promise that the Lord made to Noah 4500 years ago there abouts.

1 Corinthians 3:6-7 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.

Whether in the physical realm of growing crops for food, or in the spiritual realm of salvation and spirit growth, it is God who must give the increase. After man has planted, and cultivated, and watered, and done all that he can do, he has to go to the house and wait for God to give the increase. And if God doesn’t give the increase there will be no increase, and no harvest! But thank God that He is pleased to give the increase in both the physical and the spiritual realms.

6. To the kings and rulers, Jesus is the sovereign King of Kings and Lord of Lord’s.

To King Herod, Pontius Pilate, and King Agrippa, Jesus was a threat, and a trouble maker, and at best a nuisance. Sad to say, I’m sure that this is true of many of our rulers today. But to king Nebuchadnezzar, He was the sovereign King of all Heaven and earth:

Daniel 4:35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

To John the Apostle, who saw Jesus in a vision returning to earth at his second coming, He was “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” (Revelation 19:16). Is Jesus your King and your Lord this evening. Well, I’ll assure you that He is, whether you know it or not. May we as God’s children willingly crown Him as our King and Lord over our lives, and praise Him and Worship Him as such, and above all, may we live for Him and serve Him as our rightful Lord and King! And may God reveal Jesus to the lost as your Lord and Saviour, even this night.

7. To the lost sinner, Jesus is the suffering Saviour.

1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

To all who are brought to see themselves as sinners in the sight of God; who see themselves deserving of God’s judgment; who see themselves in danger of the wrath of God, which presently abides upon them; Jesus is the suffering Saviour.

He is the one Who “once suffered for sins” on the old rugged cross of Calvary.

He is the “just” One, Who suffered for the “unjust”. If only we could comprehend that contrast!

He did all this in order to bring us to God, who because of our sins, are unable to approach God, much less come into His presence.

He did this by “being put to death in the flesh”, and being “quickened (or made alive) by the Spirit. By His death, burial, and resurrection He paid the ransom price for our sins, and redeemed us to God by His blood, and made us worthy and fit for Heaven, and “accepted in the beloved.”

Do you believe that Jesus did all of this for you? If you believe with all your heart, then you are saved from your sins and have been given the gift of eternal life!

Conclusion:

We could have mentioned many other groups of people if we had the time. But we want to close this evening by asking the question, Who is Jesus to you tonight?

Is He the sovereign master of your life?

Is He your teacher?

Do you find in Him all the wisdom and knowledge that you need for life?

Is He your Great Physician this evening?

Do you see Jesus as the one Who gives all the increase in your life?

Is Jesus your Lord and King?

And perhaps most importantly of all, is Jesus your suffering Saviour this evening?
