Total Depravity

What makes this church different than every other church in town?

Doctrines like the one we, by the grace of God, will preach this morning.

Man doesn't see, or admit that he is depraved- this is part of his depravity.

Mankind is depraved in:

Mind & Heart:

Genesis 6:5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal (or natural) mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Affections:

John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Will:

John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

In Conscience:

Titus 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

In Speech:

Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

Psalm 5:9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.

Natural Man is Corrupt From Head to Foot:

Isaiah 1:5 Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. 6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

From Birth:

Psalm 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Psalm 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

Therefore:

There Is Nothing Good in Natural Man:

Romans 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Man by Nature Is In Rebellion Against God:

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Man by Nature Has No Spiritual Strength:

Romans 5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Man by Nature Is Spiritually Dead:

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Man by Nature Cannot Understand Spiritual Things:

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Natural Man Is Unable to Change His Condition:

Jeremiah 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

Man by Nature has No Freewill nor Ability to Come to Christ:

John 6:44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. 65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

People Need the Sovereign Grace of God in Salvation

If any one is to be saved, it is by the sovereign grace of God. This is not just an important doctrine, but total depravity has make it essential to the lost for salvation.
